Gilbert’s Syndrome

Do you have a consistently high bilirubin level over 20 in your blood test results?  Then you may have Gilbert’s Syndrome.  10-15% of Caucasians have this condition, though much of the time it goes undiagnosed.  This is a genetic condition where part of the phase II detoxification pathways in the liver are not functioning properly to break down drugs and natural compounds.

Most people with Gilbert’s Syndrome do experience symptoms.  These include:

  • Vague digestive symptoms, usually diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Mental health disorders including anxiety and insomnia.
  • Symptoms of oestrogen dominance including heavy periods, short cycles and clotting.
  • Gall stones.

What to do if you think you have Gilbert’s Syndrome:

  • See your Naturopath!
  • Reduce your stress levels and support your body to deal with stress more effectively.
  • People with Gilbert’s syndrome have difficulty breaking down paracetamol, aspirin and Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs.  See your Naturopath for help finding natural ways to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • There are supplements available to help with Gilbert’s syndrome.  These should be prescribed by a Naturopath on an individual basis.
  • The cruciferous family of vegetables is beneficial – Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts and cabbage (Sauerkraut).
  • Probiotics are essential.
