Cystitis can be a big problem for some people. Recurring urinary tract infections make life very unpleasant, but there are some things you can do to help prevent them. Probiotics are a great start, and I always recommend a broad spectrum probiotic from the fridge containing as many different strains of bacteria as possible. If you also suffer from thrush, a probiotic yeast is also helpful.
There are many wonderful herbs that act as urinary antiseptics, helping the kill the bacteria that can cause cystitis. These include Cranberry, Uva Ursi, Corn Silk, Couch Grass and Buchu. Teas using these herbs can be drunk throughout the day, but if the infection has taken hold herbal extracts are much more potent and effective.
General immune support is also important – a non-acidic vitamin C, zinc and herbs such as Echinacea are helpful here, as well as cold liver oil. Staying off the sugar is a good way to support your immune system too.
Wear cotton underwear, not nylon, and try to avoid tights. Many people find that urinating before and after intercourse helps to prevent “honeymoon cystitis”.
